Citizen Science – protect bells!

To analyse and monitor the condition of as many bells as possible, we are reliant upon lots of people getting involved who either work professionally with bells or have contact with them in their spare time. In order to determine a bell’s musical “fingerprint”, we require a sound recording made under a fixed set of parameters, so we run training sessions (either at our site or online) to achieve this. The resulting musical fingerprints are published in our Atlas of Bells for people to consult and research.

To record a bell’s musical fingerprint, you will need:

-   Recording device e.g. smartphone
-   Tape measure and chalk
-   Camera
-   Ear protection
-   Impact cylinder or hammer (at least 1 kg mass)

Background to the Citizen Science project “Protect bells”

If a crack forms in a bell, this will end up compromising its sound behaviour so severely that it can no longer be used. To repair a cracked bell involves welding – or it might even need melting down for recasting. Particularly in Germany, where something like two-thirds of all bells were destroyed during the two world wars, each broken bell represents a major loss of cultural heritage.

The musical fingerprint

No two bells are the same. Their individual features – decorations and inscriptions, shapes and sizes – make each and every bell a unique musical instrument. That’s plain to see, but a bell can be identified even more unmistakably by its sound.
